Brake failure and fire risks – the latest safety recalls from major car brands

car recalls

Car makers BMW, Vauxhall, Seat, Volkswagen and Toyota are among several brands to have recalled vehicles over safety concerns in the last month. Major potential issues included nearly 40,000 Vauxhalls whose brakes could stop working properly and more than 165,000 BMWs that face a potential fire risk.    Vehicle recalls are common in the automotive industry and are generally a result of the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), or the manufacturer determining that a fault in a vehicle constitutes a safety defect. According to the DVSA Code of Conduct, a car must be recalled if: “a failure due to design and/or construction, is likely to affect the safe operation of the product/aftermarket part without prior warning to the user and may pose a significant risk to the driver, occupants and others. This defect will be common to a number of products/aftermarket parts that have been sold for use in the United Kingdom”.
